July 2024 Volunteer Highlights

See our volunteer highlights for July...

July 31, 2024

It has been another month of MASH supporting women who sex work in Manchester, thanks to our amazing volunteering team. Here are just a few of the fabulous volunteers we wanted to spotlight this month!

Sarah has volunteered now over a year at the Drop-in, being completely committed to MASH and our mission.

Sarah is crucial to the Drop-in, always willing to swap shifts around if we are low on numbers one day. Her smile lights up the room and makes everybody who enters feel so welcome. Whether it is in the kitchen or chatting to the women or even sorting out clothing donations, she is always a key helping hand.

As a new volunteer, it can sometimes be quite overwhelming when first beginning, getting to know everybody’s names and understanding how to communicate with service users. Becky is somebody who has only been here since April but it has like she has been here for years.

It is so great when volunteers have their first shift and you can instantly see that they will be a good fit for MASH. We are so grateful to have volunteers like Becky who settle into their roles so quickly – she is confident in chatting to the women, patient, welcoming and has a bright personality. She also covers when she can and swaps shifts that can better support the women. Becky sets a great standard for volunteers and everybody at MASH

It is always sad when long-term volunteers leave us at MASH and this month we sadly waved goodbye to an amazing volunteer.

Georgia has been a volunteer with us at MASH since May 2022, being a regular volunteer at the Drop-in and more recently started doing some outreach shifts too.

Georgia is such a lovely person and the women really warm to her at the Drop-in: A shining example of a caring, reliable and attentive volunteer. We will miss her at MASH!

Student on Placement, Olivia

Thank you Georgia for being so amazing for us and Friday Drop-ins won’t be the same without you. Enjoy your time travelling, you deserve it!

Volunteering is a great way of building skills that are crucial to both personal life and work-life. Bukola has volunteered with us at the Drop-in since April and we have seen her skills build and build.

Bukola is a great person and her nursing experience definitely lends into why she has a great way of connecting with the women at Drop-in. She has just grown and grown in confidence in supporting service users.

The van goes out every night now except Saturdays and is a place where women, whilst working, can get on and know that people are here who can listen to them. With such a lovely picture of them, it makes sense to highlight both Bev and Olivia together. You can see them holding their ‘thank you’ postcards we distributed in Volunteers Week.

Bev has been with us since April and is amazing on the van. She is such a smiley person and just has a great way of talking to the women. Whilst Olivia has only been with us a month or so, she instantly hit the ground running and found her feet. They both have such a warm energy and allow the women to feel safer when they are on the van

Homeless Outreach Worker, Caroline

Thank you not only to these volunteers highlighted, but all of our team who help to make sure women who sex work in Manchester are supported.

We are MASH

For 30 years, MASH has stood by women who are sex working or thinking about it, offering non-judgemental support to improve health, safety and wellbeing.

We take MASH to women where they are at, offering support from our drop-in centre, our MASH van, in Manchester city centre, in saunas and via phone calls and home visits.

Women tell us that MASH helps them to feel safer, listened to, empowered and that in many cases it is a ‘lifeline’.
