How effective are MASH and our services?

Read the findings and recommendations from the independent evaluation of MASH

August 22, 2025

At MASH we always aim to reflect, learn and work to improve our organisation to ensure we are best meeting women’s needs and achieving our mission.

How do we measure this?

As part of this, we commissioned an independent evaluation of our organisation and our services led by research team CK Kpiaye and Sarah Tayleur.

This was a detailed piece of work undertaken between November 2024 and January 2025. It examined how effectively MASH delivers on its core mission: helping women remain safe, healthy, and empowered.

The evaluation employed a comprehensive, mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and activity data analysis. Conducted by independent researchers in collaboration with Sue’s Space, a lived-experience advisory panel, the evaluation ensured the voices and experiences of women accessing services were central.

The executive summary and full report findings are here for you to read.

MASH Evaluation Report 2023-2025 Executive Summary

Full MASH Evaluation Report 2023-2025

It includes some recommendations for MASH to follow up on including improving our demographic data collection, offering structured training on cultural competency and promoting service accessibility. All of which we have been progressing following the research.

The researchers concluded that;

MASH is an essential service for women involved in sex work,
providing safety, health support, wellbeing resources, and
pathways to independence. By continuing its trauma-informed,
person-centred approach, MASH can further its impact and ensure
that all women receive the support they need to build safer,
healthier lives.

“If it wasn’t for MASH’s partnerships with GP services and
their way of working I never would have gone to the
doctors.”
“Seeing the nurse helped me with my STDs... She supported
and encouraged me to go to the hospital and get blood
tests.”
“They are brilliant, they help you out in every way. They give
clothing, food. They are like a second family.”
“Now I have come off heroin through MASH.”
“They are there to help. They understand what I am going
through. They understand what I need.”
“Mash know and remember me and always remember the
last thing I spoke about, even if it has been months and
months. This means a lot to me and makes a difference to
my feelings.”

We are MASH

For 30 years, MASH has stood by women who are sex working or thinking about it, offering non-judgemental support to improve health, safety and wellbeing.

We take MASH to women where they are at, offering support from our drop-in centre, our MASH van, in Manchester city centre, in saunas and via phone calls and home visits.

Women tell us that MASH helps them to feel safer, listened to, empowered and that in many cases it is a ‘lifeline’.
