Celebrations as MASH receives its MBE

A group of our fabulous volunteers joined us on Wednesday 29 August at Gorton Monastery to collect our Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

August 30, 2018

MASH is one of 27 voluntary groups from across Greater Manchester to collect an engraved, commemorative crystal trophy and a certificate signed by Her Majesty the Queen which will be proudly displayed in our drop-in centre.

The award recognises best practice in volunteering work and is the equivalent of a MBE.

We were nominated for the award by our former service user, Colette, and joined fellow award recipients for a special afternoon tea and presentation event at Gorton Monastery.

Gerry Yeung OBE congratulated MASH and our volunteers at the prestigious event commenting; “The success of MASH’s outreach vehicle, sauna outreach and drop-in centre is mainly due to its diverse and skilled volunteers…MASH, thanks to its volunteers, literally provides a lifeline allowing many to gradually gain in confidence and self-belief and to rebuild their lives.”

Cate Allison, CEO of MASH, said; “I could not be prouder of our volunteers and staff team at MASH. To receive the highest recognition possible for our work empowering female sex workers and keeping them safe is true testament to the commitment of everyone involved in the organisation.

“It was a very special event and an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our volunteers. After the celebrations our dedicated volunteer team was straight back out on the streets of Manchester in our outreach van supporting female sex workers offering confidential support and safety advice.”

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a voluntary group.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers and staff both past and present who have made MASH what it is today.

We are MASH

For 30 years, MASH has stood by women who are sex working or thinking about it, offering non-judgemental support to improve health, safety and wellbeing.

We take MASH to women where they are at, offering support from our drop-in centre, our MASH van, in Manchester city centre, in saunas and via phone calls and home visits.

Women tell us that MASH helps them to feel safer, listened to, empowered and that in many cases it is a ‘lifeline’.
